Destination Pilbara (Warlu Way Self-Drive Trail) — Warlu Way Self-Drive Trail

Proving, with hard data, that stripped-back creative outperformed text-heavy ads — and using that proof to shape three years of campaigns.

The challenge

This multi-week, multi-channel self-drive trail campaign needed to prove which creative approach actually drove results — traditional text-heavy image ads versus simpler, text-free video and blog-style ads — while scaling budget and channels each year without losing sight of what was actually working.

Our solution

Big Head Digital ran side-by-side creative comparisons each year, showing text-free video and blog-style ads consistently delivered meaningfully lower cost-per-click and cost-per-landing-page-view than heavier image ads. That evidence directly shaped creative direction each season, while the channel mix was tested and refined year on year — moving from programmatic display toward better-performing channels like TikTok and Meta.

Strategy

  1. Let the numbers make the case — Rather than relying on opinion, direct performance comparisons between ad styles were shared each year to inform creative direction.
  2. Test channels honestly, including the ones that don't work — Programmatic display and native advertising were tested and compared against Meta and TikTok, with budget shifted toward whichever channel actually delivered better cost efficiency.
  3. Scale the budget as confidence grows — Campaign budget grew steadily year on year as the model proved itself across consecutive seasons.
  4. Refresh creative formats each year, not just messaging — Carousel and format decisions (e.g. dropping story-specific placements) were revisited annually based on how Meta actually served the ad formats, not on habit.
